Facebook

Facebook is the most popular social network. It was created in 2003 as an internal social network for Harvard University students by Mark Zuckerberg and arguably, the Winklevoss twins. They later sued Zuckerberg because they claimed he stole their idea.

Facebook has more than 1 billion users (1.32 billion as of March 2018) and currently owns Whats App, a very popular (mostly in Europe) messaging app and Instagram, the most popular photo app, making it the top Social Media player. Its source of revenue is ads selling.

In 2010, David Fincher (7even, Fight Club) directed The Social Network, a movie about Mark Zuckerberg’s story. At that time, the social media network had 500 million users.  Since then, they are close to triple that number.

Early 2018 Cambridge Analytica, through a whistleblower former employee, was publicly acknowledged as breaching out policy and international laws and gathered data by spying on Facebook’s users.  That data was used to manipulate the United States 2016 presidential elections.

Mark Zuckerberg appeared before Congress to explain Facebook and his business model to the lawmakers and peoples representatives.
